It's official: our national doughnut obsession is unstoppable. From singlehandedly inducing a nationwide Nutella shortage to crowning extreme milkshakes, Australia is apparently not done yet.

Get ready for the latest doughnut hybrid to hit the stores: Gelatissimo's gelato-filled doughnut ($5). Available nationally from September 9, customers can select a scoop of gelato, perhaps salted caramel or chocolate truffle, to put inside a lightly warmed doughnut, which are baked in-store daily.

The gelati chain's doughnut sandwich updates the classic ice-cream sandwich. Brioche sandwiches are common in Italy during summer, with a scoop of artisan gelato served inside a buttery, pillow-soft bun, and a few months ago Gelato Messina and Melbourne's Doughboys teamed up to create "doughsundaes".

Gelatissimo's gelato doughnuts are available at its Albert Street store in Brisbane's CBD, and will be rolled out at other locations next week.
