Wodonga's only one-hat restaurant, Broadgauge, is leaving the station, with chef David Kapay, of Jamie Oliver's Fifteen in London and Melbourne and Gordon Ramsay's Maze, planning to retool it as Miss Amelie, with a modern European focus.

Kapay grew up in the area and was head chef at the Albury Hotel before jetting off to England in 2005.

Ten years on he's returning to his roots. He'll take the keys to the heritage-listed former railway station in June from founders Steve Carne and Jodie Jones, who are moving across the border to Albury to set up Ebden and Olive, a deli specialising in cheese, charcuterie and take-home meals.

Kapay plans to shut for a week or two for some minor changes, reopening as Miss Amelie with an accessibly priced menu that's "a little bit fun". He'll press the largely unused charcoal grill into service for steak and seafood, delivered three times a week from Clamms.

In the meantime, Kapay will continue to work at 25 Toorak Road, South Yarra, where he's been head chef for the past year.
