Know what a kitty is? Apart from the feline that is? Nope, neither did we, but hang around Kitty and the Bean, Red Hill's newest cafe, and you'll get to know pretty smartly. The family-run astroturfed space overlooking the Red Hill bowls club opened this week and is already being embraced by the local community including footballers from the Broncos, just across the way. The cafe is the new baby of builder Eddie Duggan who has a long relationship with the community sports club in which it's housed.

"It's all about the community; we want to welcome everyone and introduce people to the club. We're in a great position; as well as the bowls club, we have the Broncos leagues club behind us and a TAFE and a kindergarten across the road." Mindful of the demographic, Duggan is creating a herb garden for local kids out the front, where he says they can put their name on their herbs and watch them grow.

In addition to the astroturfed front lawn with deck chairs, there's a roof terrace with sweeping views, which Duggan is fitting with market umbrellas, a perfect spot for sunset drinks he reckons.

At the moment the menu is simple, featuring coffee made by son Shafer using Botanica organic, fair-trade coffee, toasties and cakes, but Duggan says that eventually they'll offer a tapas menu. And the kitty of the name? It's the little white ball used in lawn bowls.
