New South Melbourne bar a supergroup effort

Bellota, the wine bar that opened a couple of weeks ago in South Melbourne, is something of a supergroup effort. The bar is next door to its older sibling the Prince Wine Store, and is operated by Philip Rich, Alex Wilcox and Michael McNamara. The concept is to "create a local, casual, friendly place to have a meal or a snack", Rich says. The trio has employed chef Brigitte Hafner, co-owner of Fitzroy's Gertrude Street Enoteca, to consult in the kitchen. Their chef is Stephanie Briton, a former employee of Hafner's. Gerald Diffey, of Gerald's Bar in Carlton and Brooks in the city, has consulted on the space, design and logistics, Rich says. The all-day menu includes a crustacean bar and charcuterie with a handful of main courses and a varied selection of cheeses. Rich describes the menu as "European, with French and Italian influences using local produce". While the wine list has about 50 bottles and 12 by the glass, customers can choose a bottle from the wine shop and drink it in Bellota. An upstairs space is available for wine classes and events. The 30-seater is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am until 11pm.
