Eastern arterial William Street, which stretches from the city to Kings Cross, is getting some of its swagger back, and food is playing a part in the turnaround.

Benn Newton is the latest arrival, opening a spinoff of his Stanley Street cafe Third Village at 150 William Street.

"I'm a long-term resident of the area and I've seen change coming … One of the things I've noticed with the growth of residential development in the area is so many people now walk along William Street," Newton says.

Third Village, a favourite of Momofuku Sieobo head chef Ben Greeno, is looking beyond William Street for growth, with medium-term plans for several venues.

With the slick-looking new Woolworths store and a restaurant headed to Frank Lowy's former garage both just off William, the strip is humming.
