Sydney's long-awaited meatball invasion has finally arrived, perfectly timed to coincide with our first winter cold snap.

Operators have been jostling behind the scenes to get in on the meatball action, already big business everywhere from New York to Melbourne.

As tipped earlier this year by Good Food, Gelatissimo founder and former joint CEO Dominic Lopresti has drafted ex-Otto head chef James Kidman as a consultant to craft a menu elevating the humble meatball.

The fruit of that collaboration, the Original Meatball Company, rolls out its first store on Tuesday, at shop 3, 56-58 York Street, in the city.

Bootleg Bar + Italian Food at Potts Point has also been quick to join the trend, reopening in recent weeks as Bootleg Meatballs, serving meatballs with spaghetti, in sliders and sub sandwiches.

Sydney is still waiting on the specialist meatball offering from the crew at Pony restaurant in the Rocks. One of the first to commit to the meatball onslaught, they'll need to be quick. There's no telling how long this fetish will last.
