It's a sad day for die-hard Nutella fans after a French court refused to allow a child to be legally named "Nutella".

According to French newspaper La Voix Du Nord, a judge in Valenciennes, northern France, made the ruling after a couple decided to name their four-month-old daughter after the hazelnut spread.

The judge said giving their daughter "the name of a chocolate spread" was against her interests, as it could result in "mockery and unpleasant remarks".

Obviously oblivious to the emotional pull Nutella can have on its obsessives, the judge also expressed concern about the couple naming their daughter after an official brand name.

As the parents were not present at the hearing, the judge ruled that the child should be renamed "Ella" until they come up with an acceptable name.

The decision comes after the French courts did not allow a child to be named "Fraise" (French for "strawberry") earlier this month.
