Less than a year after it opened in Park Road, Milton, the Japanese restaurant Kirei has closed up shop. Moving in is seafood restaurant Fish Roe, whose owner Robert Schob opened an operation at Paradise Point on the Gold Coast late last year. So why the move into Brisbane? One reason, he says, is affordability.

“Rent here is far cheaper per square metre than the Gold Coast,” says Schob, something that will no doubt surprise many Brisbane restaurateurs.

Fish Roe will have a licensed seafood restaurant on one side and a takeaway section with a separate entrance on the other. Schob says he aims to keep mains in the restaurant at $15-$20.

“We'll be offering everything from traditional fish and chips to lobster mornay with everything made to order in-house,” he says.

There'll also be an emphasis on healthier choices, with lots of grilled seafood as well as salads and accompaniments like couscous and rice.

A short drinks list will offer beer and wine, with the possibility of offering a few craft beers down the track. The venue, which is now being refitted, will seat about 70 and is scheduled to open on August 26.
