The chef who gave Sydney Greek-Australian creations such as scallop and eggplant moussaka and the crab and haloumi tart is strongly tipped as the next big signing at Barangaroo.

"I can't comment about [Barangaroo] at this stage," Alpha restaurant chef Peter Conistis told Good Food.

Word is the deal is separate from Alpha, where Conistis would remain at the helm even if he committed to opening a new restaurant.

The chef says Alpha's owners, the Hellenic Club, have put him on profit share and there are plans to develop an upstairs space at the Castlereagh Street restaurant this year.

The new area will likely include a private dining room and a mezze bar. Conistis' involvement at Barangaroo would lock away another piece of the development, which has confirmed a number of incoming venues, including Vanessa Martin's Mercato e Cucina and a multi-level project headed by Matt Moran and Peter Sullivan.
