The grand Majestic Theatre on New Canterbury Road in Petersham had a spell as a roller-skating venue and at one stage languished unloved, but the building is in process of the most Sydney of reboots, the marriage of property and food.

The Majestic added upstairs apartments a couple of years back, and in the next week the first stage of the food invasion of its ground floor food offering will kick off.

Owners Tim and Cheryl Reen, Warren Landsman and Carlos Ascencao have taken inspiration for their new ground floor venue from the markets of Europe.

"It'll have fruit and veg, deli, bakery and even a florist," says co-owner Carlos Ascencao.

The market will open first, followed by a Mediterranean-influenced restaurant. A wine bar will hopefully open in July.

The building has a special attachment for Ascencao. He met his wife there in the 1980s when it was a roller skating rink.
