The team behind Mornington Peninsula restaurant Terre are opening a second place in Flinders. Clinton Trevisi and chefs Janine and Rowan Herrald are planning a relaxed Italian restaurant called Cook & Norman Trattoria, on the corner of Cook and Norman streets. "We'll be focusing on traditional Italian food with lots of handmade pastas," says Trevisi. They're aiming for a mid-March opening.

The fourth Earl Canteen sandwich shop opens tomorrow. Located at 403A St Kilda Road, it joins their three existing CBD stores, 500 Bourke Street, Collins Place and Emporium Melbourne. While owners Jackie Middleton and Simon O'Regan won't serve their cult-favourite pork belly rolls at St Kilda Road, they will serve takeaway sandwiches, salads and a selection of grilled cheese sandwiches from 7am-4pm Monday to Friday.

For less than the price of dinner for one at soon-to-open Fat Duck, you can round up four friends for canapes prepared by top talents such as Adam D'Sylva, Jacques Reymond and Tony Twitchett – and help people in need. The Skinny Duck, a 14-course degustation fundraiser for food rescue charity FareShare, takes flight at the St Kilda Town Hall on Friday. Tickets ($120, for drinks and entertainment): skinnyduck.com.au.

The Smith has reopened after a quick post-Christmas refresh. The restaurant and bar, at 213 High Street, Prahran, has new colours, new uniforms and improved soundproofing, plus a redesigned menu that heads in an Asian direction, says co-owner Michael Lambie. Expect things like caramelised pork hock and bean curd rolls filled with soft shell crab.

Popup diner Kuku Mama opened quietly in Windsor in December behind adjoining bar Hoo Haa at 105 Chapel Street. Owner Paul Kasteel has taken a lead from global street food and American food trucks, serving globetrotting choices including bao, dumplings, burgers, tacos and curries. Kuku Mama is open Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm.
