Restaurant Blancmange's last service will be on May 4, with the Petersham restaurant set to join the cafe push sweeping the inner west.

Ian Meggitt, owner of the nearly eight-year-old restaurant, confirmed its sale. The new owners, Katherine and Iain Smart, will open the Pig & Pastry mid-June, following a six-week makeover.

Despite Iain's background at Michelin-starred restaurants, such as London's Chez Bruce, she says he's now ''perfecting his sausage rolls''.

''It'll be a daytime cafe, no evenings,'' Katherine says.

''Partly Ottolenghi-inspired with a bakery.''

She has the runs on the board for a daytime push. She was the cafe manager at La Fromagerie in London and now works front-of-house at Kitchen by Mike in Rosebery. Meggitt has no immediate plans.

''I want to spend more time with my family,'' he says.
