Pop-up for the people

Bob Hart and Hilary McNevin

MELBURNIANS LOVE A market, especially a boutique market in a part of town so cool even the posties have lots of ink and wear new fedoras (and those are the girl posties). We refer to the People's Market, which has opened for the summer at 64-68 Stanley Street in Collingwood. It's the brainchild of siblings and young Melbourne entrepreneurs Niki and Stephen Filipovic, and is just down from Proud Mary, up from the Wellington, and right near the Tote. The PM has settled in for the summer under the stewardship of young local architects Kristina Taranto and Steven Vidovic, who have devised a market with a vision of sustainability at its core and some damned fine food. MoVida Bakery and Hellenic Republic are back, rubbing shoulders with newer players Rockwell and Sons and Phat Brats. In short, the PM involves entertainment, retail, food, booze, workshops, yoga, art, music and market stuff. It operates Thursdays to Sundays until April 28, starting about 10am and winding up after dinner. Entry is free, but if you are prepared to offer a $2 donation, it will be gratefully accepted. A charity will benefit and you will feel better about yourself, OK?
