Pork rolls on food safety hit list

The Asian pork roll is under the gaze of the NSW Food Authority.

Up to 11 patients with suspected salmonella poisoning were admitted to hospital in the Hornsby area late last month after eating pork rolls at a local food outlet.

A spokeswoman for the authority confirmed it was investigating the incidents.

"There have been a number of salmonella outbreaks which have been linked to products using raw eggs. Raw-egg dressings are sometimes used in the restaurant and cafe sector. This is a particularly popular ingredient in Asian-style pork rolls," she said.

The authority recently undertook a joint project with the Fairfield City Council focusing on the use of eggs in bakeries.

Deep-fried ice-cream made with raw egg has also been on the hit list, following a number of incidents of foodborne illnesses.

Asian restaurants aren't alone. Caesar salad dressing and chocolate mousse made with raw egg are included in reported incidents with the NSW Food Authority. With Christmas looming, another potential hazard is about to raise its head. Eggnog has also come under the authority's gaze after previous incidents.
