The winners of the 14th annual San Pellegrino Cafe Society Photography competition were announced at Gazi last week.

Who won? Daniel Bornstein did, for his photograph After Rembrandt taken at the Armstrong Street Foodstore in Middle Park.

The title refers to Rembrandt's The Anatomy Class of Dr. Tulp (1631) painting, which influenced Bornstein's work.

''Cafes after hours'' was the brief given to the RMIT photography students who entered the competition.

To brainstorm ideas for the shoot, Bornstein talked with the team at Armstrong Street "about how drastically the place could change after doors are locked and the chairs are stacked", he says.

His favourite San Pellegrino flavour is blood orange and he created the piece in which "the finest Italian prosciutto" is dissected from the tattooed body on the table. "I wanted it to be humorous," Bornstein says.
