Sydney's top restaurants are bracing themselves for a cut in the supply of heirloom produce following the sale of Berridale Farm in the Blue Mountains.

Quay, Aria, Sepia and Rockpool are just a sample of restaurants that rely on the supply of turnips, radishes and white carrots from the farm, which owner Richard Kalina confirms has sold.

''We settle May 9 and the new owner doesn't have plans to continue to operate [the produce business],'' Kalina tells Short Black.

But there's good news in the wings, with a young couple, both with degrees in horticulture, advanced in plans to continue where Kalina leaves off when he departs to take up a position with the Eden Project in Cornwall, England.

''One of my neighbours is offering them his land to use, and the owners of Lilianfels and the Hydro Majestic are keen to get involved with them, possibly with a kitchen garden,'' Kalina says.
