A Vietnamese takeaway specialising in rice-paper rolls is planning an extensive rollout across Melbourne over the next year.

The Roll'd store in the city's Goldsborough Lane has had long queues almost every day since it opened more than a year ago. Now its owners have notified the competition watchdog they expect to open five more franchises in the next 12 months.

The move is reminiscent of the surge in sushi franchisees over the past decade when sushi hand rolls became a mainstream snack food in Australia. Roll'd already has four stores in central Melbourne, with a store in Chadstone among the five planned.

The recent application does not say where the new stores were likely to open, but the company's website lists Toorak, Doncaster and Hawthorn as desirable locations. It also asks for franchisees in Brisbane.

The application describes the food as: rice-paper rolls, soups, salads, filled rolls, hot and cold beverages.

It also reveals the company expects to have six approved suppliers that would supply meat, vegetables, condiments, packaging and appliances to franchisees.
