Landmark Bronte restaurant-cafe Swell has shut, its closure following hot on the heels of the departure of its restaurant sibling, Bronte Cucina next door, which impressed enough to be listed in the latest SMH Good Food Guide.

Owner Sandy Bruns says she pulled the pin on the 14-year-old Swell, a favourite with beach-going celebrities, and Bronte Cucina, after being unable to agree to terms with the landlord on a new lease.

Bruns, who has worked in Sydney restaurants and cafes for more than 30 years, says she doesn't have plans to open a new venue and is keen to move into consultancy. She will focus on her strength in the recruitment and training of front-of-house staff.
