Just opened ... Social Eating House & Bar in Broadbeach.
You'd have to be nuts to open a new restaurant in the middle of peak holiday season in a tourist town like the Gold Coast, right? Matt and Amy Jefferson, owners of the brand new Social Eating House & Bar in Broadbeach don't think so, despite seeing 1000 people pour through their 89-seater in the first week. The couple, who also own nearby RockSalt, opened on December 29.
"A lot of the feedback we got at RockSalt was that there just weren't enough good places to eat in Broadbeach", Amy Jefferson says. "We wanted to do something completely different from RockSalt but also something different for the Gold Coast."
Certainly the usual Gold Coast glitz has been toned down, in favour of a more offbeat, industrial decor based on a palette of navy, charcoal and white. "We looked at a few places for inspiration; Garagiste [Hobart] and Public [Brisbane], and we've had lots of comments about how great the place looks."

As the name suggests, the emphasis is on share plates in smaller and larger sizes; from oysters served in a variety of ways to charcuterie plates, half or whole roast chickens, tuna tataki and more. There's also a not too shabby wine list as well as sake, beer, whisky and cocktails. Jake Cooley, formerly RockSalt's sous chef, has stepped up to head the kitchen.
