Pop-up cooking school The Social Kitchen fires up next week at the Queen Victoria Market. The collaboration between Fisher & Paykel, Peter Rowland Catering and the market will operate in A Shed, on the corner of Peel and Victoria streets.

On market days – Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday – the school will hold themed shopping and cooking classes by chefs from Peter Rowland Catering. On Monday and Wednesday, it will run four-hour masterclasses by high-profile chefs including Shane Delia of Maha, Scott Pickett from Estelle and Saint Crispin, Dave Verheul from the Town Mouse and Adam Liston of Northern Light in Collingwood.

Scott Pickett says his classes will harness what's available at the market seasonally. "I like to show the class a couple of interesting restaurant techniques that they might not know."

The Social Kitchen is just part of the market's "revitalisation strategy". On Wednesday the Night Market returns with up to 80 traders each week from 5pm to 10pm; the quality of market vendors is constantly evolving (spice shop Gewurzhaus is the latest addition to the Dairy Hall) and the Melbourne City Council recently bought a 6500-square-metre block of land known as the Munro site on Therry Street, which will be part of the market's redevelopment.

The Social Kitchen Cooking School opens on November 13 and will run for 26 weeks. Market classes are $135 a head and the four-hour masterclasses are $275 a head. Bookings: thesocialkitchen.com.au.
