Stuart McVeigh resigns from Sofitel

Bob Hart and Hilary McNevin

Stuart McVeigh, head chef of No.35 in the Sofitel, has resigned and will leave after Christmas. A Brit, McVeigh arrived in Australia 10 years ago after working in London as Shane Osborn's sous chef at the Michelin-starred Pied a Terre. He came to Melbourne to work at the late and much-lamented Le Restaurant, and has been head chef at No.35, the nearest thing to Le Restaurant that Sofitel has come up with, since it opened three years ago. ''It's time to move on,'' McVeigh says. ''It's been satisfying but it's time for something else.'' He's not quite clear what that something else might be, but is considering the idea of opening a place in his local patch of Keilor East. But that's some time off; his immediate plans are to ''take a break and work out what's next''.
