The man who introduced a generation of Melburnians to their first taste of sushi, Kunihiro "Kuni" Ichikawa, has died, aged 67. Kuni's restaurant opened in 1977 in Crossley Lane, moving to Little Bourke Street as the business grew. In the early years Ichikawa had to give away sushi to tempt Australians to taste it and he found Japanese ingredients and even fresh fish hard to obtain. But four decades on, there's a Japanese restaurant in almost every Melbourne shopping strip, many owned by chefs who trained at Kuni's.
