Tang sorbet, mediaeval dinners and surf 'n turf

Fancy a mediaeval dinner? A nostalgic trip back to the '70s? How about a meal fit for an emperor or a quick trip to Lebanon without leaving home?

Brisbane's chefs are firing up their imaginations in preparation for Good Food Month in October.

The Hats Off dinners, where restaurants do a one-off themed dinner, are looking like filling a lot of food lovers' October diary dates. Brent's in Toowong is going retro with old favourites like oysters Kilpatrick, prawn cocktail, scallops mornay and (lordy!) a "Tang" sorbet along with steak Diane and peach Melba. Thankfully the Liebfraumilch is being replaced by some more modern matched drops.

Alejandro Cancino at Urbane has been inspired by the book Eating with Emperors and has come up with a menu inspired by an 1845 dinner made for King Ernest-August I of Hanover.

Meanwhile, its sister venue, the Euro, is going mediaeval with a three-course feast.

It is "surf n turf" at Aria (we suspect a little bit posher than the pub standard) and an eating trip through Lebanon at Gerard's Bistro with cocktails by Johnny and Elie and Johnny Moubarak of the Lychee Lounge.

Other participants in Hats Off include Sake, Stokehouse, and Vintaged, while Dell' Ugo, New Farm, Custom's House Brasserie, Aria, and Pony have signed up for set price lunches under the "Let's Do Lunch" banner.
