Pop the champagne! The new food emoji are coming.

No longer will we lament the lack of taco icon (#wheresthetacoemoji). Taco Tuesday (and Wednesday and Thursday …) will soon be easily expressed with the tap of a phone screen, with Unicode adding to its library of cute keypad picture icons. Our universal fondness for Mexican food is further cemented with a burrito button also on the way – ole!

Four of Good Food's 10 emoji wishes have been granted. Taco, cheese wedge, hotdog and a champagne bottle with a popping cork, will all appear in the latest Unicode update, version 8.0, to be released June 17. However, we'll have to wait to see whether the respective phone operating systems install the emoji additions in future updates.

A candy-striped bucket of popcorn and a turkey make up the other new foodie inclusions. We're still lobbying for the distinctly Aussie meat pie and chicken parma emoji.

And rest assured, bacon-lovers, a bacon emoji may be on the way. Unicode Consortium announced last month a shortlist of prospective emoji characters for version 9.0, slated for release mid-2016. Candidates include an avocado, croissant, multi-tasking cucumber-pickle hybrid, potato, carrot, a pair of clinking champagne glasses, and bacon rashers.
