$1 oysters at the Morrison

A month-long celebration of the oyster is happening at The Morrison Bar and Oyster Room (225 George St, Sydney). From 6-7pm every day in August you can indulge in the bivalve beauties for $1 each. Not a bad deal when the going rate for oysters at inner-city restaurants is about $4. Daily oyster and wine flights are also good value and there's an oyster-eating competition on Tuesday, August 19 ($30 per person).

Beer taps take over

International Beer Day (IBD) has been slow to take off globally but any excuse to drink beer is a good one, so you may as well embrace it. IBD is on Friday August 1, conveniently timed for International Hangover Day on August 2. The Australian Heritage Hotel (100 Cumberland St, The Rocks) has a bit of a tap takeover featuring beer from Parramatta's Riverside Brewing, among other drops from Hawthorn Brewing and Endeavour. Northdown Craft Beer Movement has a pop-up bar at The Golden Sheaf (429 New South Head Rd, Double Bay) with bottles such as Evil Twin "Yang" Imperial IPA, Moylans "Chelsea" Porter and Baird "Rising Sun" Pale Ale. However, the best way to celebrate IBD is a beer at a local Sydney brewery. The newly-opened Modus Operandi (14 Harkeith St, Mona Vale) is good one, as is The Australian Brewery (350 Annangrove Rd, Rouse Hill) and Batch Brewing Co (44 Sydenham Rd, Marrickville).

A Surry Hills bake sale

Yeast will also be rising at Paramount House (80 Commonwealth St, Surry Hills) on the weekend. Kicking off 9am on Saturday, August 2 is Flour Market, a bake sale involving some of Sydney's hottest bakers and pastry chefs. Iggy's, Brickfields, Brewtown Newtown, Black Star Pastry and Andy Bowdy (he of the mind-melting cakes at Newtown's Hartsyard), Katherine Sabbath and Brooklyn Boy Bagels will all be whipping up treats for the bearded-masses.

Food hits the stage

Food. Not the most inventive title for a play about about sisters who run a takeaway joint, but you can't accuse the writer for not addressing the subject matter. Food tells the story of Elma and Nancy, who dream to one day stop flipping burgers and turn their diner into a restaurant showcasing their cooking prowess. Kind of the opposite to what most fine-dining chefs are doing in Sydney these days. The audience becomes part of the play as restaurant guests served minestrone soup, bread and local wine. Food is on a Glen Street Theatre (Cnr Glen St and Blackbutts Rd, Belrose) until August 6.

Family fun in Hunters Hill

For a day of family fun, Hunters Hill Moocooboola Festival is on once more. On Sunday, August 3, Boronia Park Ovals will host markets, live music, a car show, dog show, animal farm and plenty of food and wine. Local Italian restaurants will have stalls and there will also be Asian street food, tapas, German sausages and that festival-stalwart, gozleme. Hunters Hill Hotel will be pouring the wines and Joe Hockey will be judging the dog show.
