Greek street food has found a home in the inner west.
Zeus Street Greek opens on Thursday, June 12, in Drummoyne and is celebrating on Saturday with free souvla for everyone in the family. Souvla translates to big hunks of lamb (or pork) threaded on a spit and slow-cooked over a barbecue.
The free souvla - is available from 12pm - 3pm as part of Zeus's first "I Love Souvla Saturday".
For every souvla Zeus gives away, the business will donate $2 to Father Chris Riley's "Youth Off The Streets" charity. Assisting a good cause by accepting free charcoal lamb: what’s not to love?
Zeus Street Greek is a collaboration between the teams behind Pony Dining and Crust Gourmet Pizza. The founders are first-generation Hellenic Australian and there's a bevy of other Greek specialties on the menu.
"The Zeus" looks as mighty as its namesake - slow-cooked lamb wrapped up in pita bread with smoked eggplant, Aegean slaw, onion, and parsley.
There's also a "Nude Zeus" option with no pita for any carb-o-phobes and paleo dieters.
Spanakopita, haloumi, grain salad, and traditional dips are some of the other Greek classics the Drummoyne restaurant will be hawking and a rizogalo (rice pudding) with fig jam and cinnamon looks to have perfectly timed its debut for the winter months.
