The people have spoken. In a poll of Victorians' favourite cheap eats restaurants – part of the inaugural The Age Good Food Guide People's Choice Award – Flemington long-player Laksa King has romped home as the budget diner's champion.

The Malaysian restaurant opened in an arcade off Racecourse Road, Flemington, in 1998 before moving to larger premises in 2010 and has developed a cult-like following among Melburnians.

Chef Shane Delia, of Maha fame, eats there at least once a week, and almost always orders beef laksa, one of menu's nine varieties of Chinese-Malaysian rice noodle soup. Delia asks for a side dish (or two) of house-made chilli and belachan sambal for extra fire power.
