In 2013 the Australian International Beer Awards attracted 1480 entries from over 230 brewers in 35 countries.
Organisers expect a strong showing this year, with judging to be held in Melbourne from April 28 to May2.

The awards are conducted jointly by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and Federation University Australia (formerly University of Ballarat).

The awards grew rapidly after their establishment in the mid-90s. Organisers now focus more on promoting the event, and the winners, to consumers. The winners are announced as part of Victoria’s increasingly popular Good Beer Week.

This year, Good Beer Week runs from May 17–25. Organisers anticipate 200 events being held at 160 venues across the state. You can track the beer awards and eventually see the full results at rasv.org.au and see details of Good Beer Week at good beerweek.com.au

Mad Brewers Garden de Paradisi Wheat Beer 568ml $7.50

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then America’s Flying Dog Brewery, with its quirky Ralph Steadman cartoons, and Belgium’s Hoegaarden Forbidden Fruit ale should feel flattered by the look and name, respectively, of Mad Brewers outstanding new, clovey, spicy, lemony, strong Belgian-style wheat ale.

Rocks Brewing Co Hangman Pale Ale 330ml $2.85

The Rocks Brewery, Sydney, introduced its American-style pale ale in bottle early last year. The bottle captures the aromatic hops high notes and intense bitterness of the style well. The full, malty palate, however, fell a little flat, making me wonder about the freshness of the bottle.
