European$$

Euro pop meets Old World traditions in this hip food-child of Urbane. Outside, a metal wall hole-punched with food profiles; inside, fluorescent neon highlights temper original sandblasted brick. Such playful overlays continue into the service, which is polished but with plenty of smiles, and the food, which arrives fragrant and full of surprise. Tamarind-glazed pork belly is dressed in apple flavours, hidden amid ribbons of cucumber and spring onion. Prawns luxuriate in a smoked tomato salsa layered with the spicy notes of watercress. Duck legs (secreting a cream of duck intensity instead of bones) jostle with hearts of beetroot, petals of dried sour apple and a mysterious sweet crumb redolent of walnut. While dessert fell a little shy of expectations (the pavlova more brittle meringue than textural adventure), The Euro's fun-in-the-details approach is a welcome respite to any financial district sobriety.
