Lebanese$$

Bayte ('house' in Arabic; pronounced 'bay-tee') is a straight, Middle Eastern-inspired spot on getting-groovier Johnston Street. Coffee pots and trinkets decorate the split-level, terracotta-coloured space, and there's a sunny courtyard out back. Chef and co-owner Julie Touma dishes out all-day breakfasts such as lamb mince on charred flatbread, loaded with pinenuts and balanced with tangy pomegranate molasses. Wraps provide cheap lunch options, but consider lingering with a glass of Lebanese riesling (who knew?) and some mezze dishes including a spicy snapper and rockling pie, or lamb and burghul balls filled with spinach.
