French$$

Don't be fooled by the dinky doorway at the end of a lane: step in here and it's like Paris through the looking glass. There's a large dining hall and a roomy French-styled courtyard but, still, free tables can be scarce. The platters are popular (both the sweet-and-savoury breakfast option and the super-sized ploughman's lunch featuring pork belly, brie, baguette and a sweet treat), as are hot dishes such as a deliciously crisp and tender lemon and rosemary chicken on a rich slick of lentils and leek. The patisserie counter is an essential stop on your way out, and worth a stand-alone visit.
