Stylish Kelp, with its minimalist beige-grey interior and city-slick vibe, is patrolled by a chic young staff, ferrying good coffee, French toast and seafood linguine by day, and more serious food by night. Dinner might begin with duck (in the forms of a meaty ras el hanout-scented terrine and a buttery parfait, the richness of each cut by pickled radish); proceed to a cheese souffle (with mushrooms, truffled polenta, shallot cream and caramelised carrot puree) or spatchcocked chicken rubbed with the chilli spice mix berbere, pan-baked and served with artichokes, smoked oyster mushrooms, leeks and house-cured bacon; then conclude with such suitably elaborate riches as the Banoffee pie (fresh banana with cinnamon toffee, macadamia biscuit and real vanilla icecream). The chef's Caribbean roots are subtly visible in his inclination towards warm spicing and the use of house-smoked ingredients.
