Past the impressive array of Focus and Bianchi bikes that line Atelier de Velo's spacious showroom lies a little espresso bar where the staff take coffee as seriously as cycling (but without the confronting bulges and shaved legs). A Mecca Espresso long black ($3.90) is sharp, spicy and brewed with precision, the menu is small and sincere, and a thick-cut slab of banana bread struggles to squeeze into the toaster, getting there in the end to much joy and melting of butter. Members of the lycra league can happily leave their wheels in the laneway before carb-loading on homemade Bircher and berries and cycling home.
