Lucky Tsotsi Shebeen & Bar

African$$

Not everyone will get the nostalgic references to Castle Beer and Savannah Cider, Mrs Balls chutney, chakalaka and Koo baked beans. But it’s not much of a cultural stretch to grasp the concept of happy hour drinks at $5, with a dish of chicken livers in a hot, thick, tangy sauce, served with sliced bread for sopping. This convivial South African street-food shack does a fine line in ribs and piri-piri chicken, spiced lamb samosas with the aforesaid Mrs Balls and yoghurt, plus a lexicon of intriguing desserts such as milk tart and koeksisters (fried, plaited dough strips soaked in sweet-spiced syrup).
