From a pub that used to be called the Roughy by locals, the Carlisle has fast become one of the more reliable bistros in the inner west. The menu changes frequently and the standard is consistently high, with fresh produce and seasonal dishes galore. The gnocchi with roasted pumpkin, peas, sage, spinach, parmesan and nutbrown butter, for example, was cooked perfectly. Ditto the pork belly with braised red cabbage, shallots and apple puree. Save room for the cheese plate. Very kid-friendly (with a matching second menu), this is packed with families enjoying a rare night out and restaurant quality food.
