What Katie Ate: Recipes and Other Bits & Bobs by Katie Quinn Davies, Penguin, $49.99

Davies, a food photographer, stylist, blogger and passionate amateur cook, comes across as highly personable and unpretentious in the introduction to this, her first cookbook.

She's a stylist first and foremost, so What Katie Ate looks beautiful. Clearly not a proponent of the inhumanly pristine school of food photography, lots of her pictures feature crumbs and used cutlery - all somehow aesthetically pleasing.

The book's faux-yellowed, stained pages, and manual typewriter font, are appealingly nostalgic.

Davies describes her eclectic selection as ''simple and seasonal''.

We think it's sophisticated and approachable.

Lots of the recipes caught the attention, from the caramelised mandarins with orange-blossom toffee and fairy floss to the quinoa and lentil salad with asparagus, mint and halloumi.
