Fresh: What's good at the farmers' markets

Sophie O'Neil

Try this: Oz Fresh Herbs' broccoli rabe looks like leafy broccolini, but it has a stronger, more pungent flavour. It's fantastic sauteed and served with poached eggs. Find it at Carlton and Veg Out (St Kilda).

Cook this: With its yellow, pink and red stalks and robust leaves, rainbow chard will transform into a colourful braise to serve with roast beef and horseradish cream.

Best buy: The flavour of Baw Baw Organics' tangelos has opened up and they're particularly juicy. Available at Veg Out (St Kilda) market, along with their abundance of organic cauliflowers, grapefruit and last nicola potatoes.

Accredited farmers' markets Wednesday, August 30: University of Melbourne (Parkville). Saturday, September 2: Carlton, Coburg, Echuca, Golden Plains (Bannockburn), Kingston (Highett), Sunraysia (Mildura), Veg Out (St Kilda), Wodonga Junction, Woodend. Sunday, September 3: Castlemaine, Flemington, Hurstbridge, Shepparton, South Geelong, Swan Hill, Tallarook.
