Whirrakee, in a grand Edwardian-era bank building, with views to Rosalind Park and Alexandra fountain, is Bendigo’s go-to fine diner for special dinners and great-value set lunches. Elegant food matches the setting, thanks to owner-chef Brent Slade. His passion is evident throughout his well-balanced menu. You might start with artfully plated crisp lamb sweetbreads with eggplant puree and shallot dressing, or slow-braised berkshire pork belly with glazed pear, braised turnip, crackling, shiso and cider jus. Mains might include roasted duck breast with a confit leg cigar, sticky lentils, poached quince and tarragon jus, or rare seared tuna with shaved fennel and an orange and dill dressing. Dessert highlights seasonal fruit: perhaps peaches, roasted and as a sorbet, with pistachio praline. Complimentary little tastes from the kitchen arrive throughout the meal, adding to the sense of occasion. Smart service and an impressive wine list round out this special package.
