Brewery boost

Six years after establishing in Byron Bay, Stone & Wood Brewing is poised to triple its brewing capacity. Partner and brewer Brad Rogers says Stone & Wood's new 50-hectolitre brewery, under construction at Murwillumbah, will have double the capacity of the existing Byron Bay facility, which will continue to operate.

Rogers says the expansion is necessary to meet rapidly growing demand, driven largely by the company's flagship, Pacific Ale. Roger says, ''We're going 100 per cent but our customers want more. We can't make enough''.

He says Stone & Wood enjoys great success in the Northern Rivers district, hence the location of the new brewery just 50 kilometres north of the original. The brewery and packaging line is largely in place, says Rogers, and mainly awaits approvals to be up and running.

Brewboys Maiden Ale ★★★½
330ml $4.15

This bottle-conditioned amber ale, from Brewboys of Adelaide, combines malted barley from several countries, including Britain, Germany and Australia, and fresh hop flowers from Nelson, New Zealand. The pungency of the hops cuts through the rich, smooth, caramel-like malt flavours, but became a little astringent in the after-burn.

Lobethal Bierhaus India Pale ★★★★
Ale 330ml $3.90

Lobethal Bierhaus, Adelaide Hills, offers a family-friendly space to dine and relax and enjoy one of the excellent beers brewed on site. The Bierhaus' deep amber India Pale Ale provides an exceptionally smooth, well-balanced expression of this high alcohol (5.9 per cent), hoppy English style.
