Barrio

Barrio means neighbourhood in Spanish, and it's a fitting name for a place that's become a popular gathering spot for locals. Housed in a century-old former fire station, the dining room's grand proportions and moody coffee-coloured interior, complete with glossy wood tables and sparkling glassware, are paired with a flexible, Mediterranean menu. Start by grazing on tapas including bomba - Spanish croquettes filled with soft potato and pork belly paired with sweetish tomato sauce - or a simple dish of perfect crisp-fried calamari with salsa verde. Four pastas and risottos are available as entrees or mains. A substantial main of seared salmon fillet appealed with a jammy tomato sauce and glistening fried eggplant spears. The lamb tagine tended towards dryness, but was lifted by fluffy cous cous and a creamy pot of yoghurt. Desserts stick to the familiar, although a rich, orange-infused crema Catalana was a standout. Brisk service sometimes lacks a little warmth, but you'll rarely be kept waiting.
