Steakhouse

As Australia's self-proclaimed beef capital, it's not unexpected that Rockhampton boasts a number of steakhouses. More of a surprise is how simply but elegantly Bistro 98 pulls off the steak and seafood motif. The menu, while not extensive or adventurous, delivers the standards well. It's 'starters' rather than entrees here, and the chicken and mushroom risotto is cooked perfectly and served with a tangy red onion marmalade. Steak comes in three cuts, unadorned but for gratin and a choice of sauces. A request for medium has the steak arrive cooked perfectly with a hint of pink in the centre and, befitting the region, is delightfully tender and juicy. Non-steak options are limited to a vindaloo curry, grilled fish, chicken or a vegetarian pasta. A clipped dessert menu features a chocolate brownie that is warm and moist, served with a house-made pecan ice-cream. Service is professional with a friendly, country charm that makes you feel instantly welcome.
