Tasmania has established itself as the source of outstanding Australian sparkling wines, thanks to its cool southerly climate. Most of its regions – Pipers River, Tamar Valley, East Coast, Coal River Valley, Derwent Valley and Huon Valley – are suitable for sparkling wine grapes. Cool growing conditions mean high acidity, complex aromas and flavours, and delicate mouth-feel in the wines. High acidity is important if a wine is to age long-term on its lees, and long aging enhances the complexity of these wines. Here are three great-value Tasmanian sparkling wines that won high awards at the recent Tasmanian Wine Show 2018, which I chaired.

All estate-grown chardonnay, from vintages 2010, 2011 and 2012, and matured on lees for 12 months. The colour is light yellow and the bouquet has fresh-herb nuances combined with creamy nougat and a hint of toastiness. It's intense and refined in the mouth, with softness, balance and blanc de blancs restraint. Cork; 12 per cent alcohol.

Made from pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier and aged for more than a year on its lees. Full salmon-pink hue; strawberry, nettle aromas with smoky, nutty overtones. Crisp and tangy in the mouth, with refreshing acidity, finishing soft and fruity. Cork; 12 per cent alcohol.
