With six wineries in the Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Barossa Valley and Tasmania, Handpicked Wines is bringing the cellar door experience to the CBD grid at its new three-storey house of fun.
Handpicked Wines Melbourne Cellar Door, in the 80 Collins development, combines a buzzy ground floor retail wine shop, tasting facility and dining area open from breakfast to supper with a calmer top-storey wine bar dubbed the Flight Deck. Finally, on the mezzanine level, there's the "Experience Room", which can cater for private and corporate events.
DesignOffice, which designed Melbourne's Higher Ground, is responsible for the fitout, which incorporates operational wine barrels and lavish use of American oak joinery.
The goal, says Handpicked's chief winemaker, Peter Dillon, "is to bring the charm of viticulture and winemaking to an urban experience".
Curated wine tastings, wine flights, barrel tastings and regular wine workshops will be on offer and Handpicked winemakers will visit regularly to chat to customers.
Crumpets with lemon curd, vanilla creme fraiche and Tasmanian leatherwood honey star on the brief breakfast menu, and later in the day, there are wine-friendly snacks such as local and imported cheeses and charcuterie, and seasonal dishes such as scorched heirloom tomatoes with herbs and buffalo yoghurt. Order ahead and you can even eat Beluga caviar (in season) with your Tasmanian sparkling.
Open Mon-Wed 8am-10pm, Thu-Fri 8am-11pm, Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 11am-10pm.
