Back in May Good Food picked up the pizza scent in the Sydney CBD, predicting Double Bay's Matteo was opening a second site on Bond Street in the city.

It has taken longer than expected to fire up the pizza oven, but Matteo Downtown finally opens on Tuesday, September 25.

The Grounds of Alexandria design outfit ACME is behind the interior (it is also doing the upcoming Felix Bar a few blocks away).

Matteo Downtown picks up where Double Bay left off, the brief all-day restaurants of Milan and Rome.

Chef Orazio D'Elia will trot out his southern Italian staples as well as a few of the dishes inspired by his northern wanderings, plus, being the city we'll get a look at his breakfast repertoire.

That'll include "uovo in purgatorio", Italian-style eggs in purgatory, which the venue pitches as similar to shakshuka.

There's also scrambled eggs with pecorino, Italian-style pork sausages, pepper, cannellini beans and miche bread.

If that doesn't grab you, maybe the mozzarella bar will?

Open Mon-Fri 7am-12am, Sat 5pm-midnight.
