Melbourne's sandwich obsession rolls on, with the opening of Ollie's Deli in Footscray causing much excitement for locked-down locals in need of delicious carb-based comfort and good coffee. There's been a (socially distanced) queue out the door ever since it opened in early August.

The tiny, bright and buzzy sandwich bar is the brainchild of inner west locals Allen Vong and friends, who saw a gap in Footscray's sandwich offering, and filled it – with irresistible, highly instagrammable melts.

Right now six varieties are racing out the door: the pastrami, the BFC (buttermilk fried chicken), the brekkie bagel, the truffle mushroom melt, the Italian and the tuna melt, with plans for more fillings in the works.

There's also coffee from Industry Beans, and pastries, drinks and other goodies from local suppliers including Cobb Lane, Candied Bakery, Hop Nation and Gourmet Deli House.

Opening mid-pandemic was a gamble, says Vong, but so far it's paying off.

"It was incredibly daunting and risky for us to open Ollie's Deli through the global pandemic, especially during lockdown 6.0, but we've been overwhelmed with all the love and support we have received so far. The community in the inner west is truly amazing."

And they love sandwiches.
