Who doesn't love a fortune cookie after some sizzling beef and a plate of lemon chicken? Well, we've stumbled on the equivalent post-meal experience for anyone chowing down at the northern end of the Sydney CBD in coming months.

We Are All Astonishingly Wise, an interactive fortune-telling video installation from artist Katy B Plummer, has popped up on Abercrombie Lane, part of the City of Sydney temporary laneway art program.

Given the installation is just a rissole throw away from sandwich queen Marcella Nelson-Aebi's recently opened Calabria, the idea of subliminal advertising crossed our mind when the fortune teller offered up "Lovers share some sandwiches".

So we set about tracking down the artist to try and discover more. "I didn't even know she was there, it was just a happy marriage, although I do love a Marcella sandwich," Plummer told Good Food.

"It's not a joke to me, the oracle – it's deadly serious," she adds.

And its timing isn't a coincidence, Plummer says, popping up in the laneway at a time "the world stops making sense".

Nelson-Aebi admits she's put the oracle through its paces, and offers up her own fortune telling. "A schnitzel a day keeps the mistress away," she says.
