Attica chef Ben Shewry wants to send a message about rejecting hate and raise "much needed" funds for the victims of the Christchurch mosque shooting.

So he is gathering some of Victoria's top chefs to host a bake sale at Shewry's Ripponlea fine diner on Saturday.

"This event is so completely not who we are [in New Zealand]," he says. "It's such a peaceful and inclusive society and everyone's basically welcome."

The cause has rallied Dave Verheul (Embla), Jo Barrett and Matt Stone (Oakridge Estate), Phil Wood (Pt Leo Estate), Kate and Cam Reid (Lune Croissantaerie), Shannon Martinez (Smith & Daughters), Daniel Wilson (Huxtaburger), Peter Gunn (Ides), Ash and Gary McBean (Gary's Meats), and Mia and Mike Russell (Baker Bleu).

"I thought about inviting a group of friends to get together and … grieve a little bit about the [Christchurch] event and what happened, but also put something out there," Shewry says.

While nothing can change what has happened, Shewry says, he hopes the bake sale unites people in their rejection of violence and hate speech.

Also expect pastries by Lune Croissanterie, cheesecakes by Cutler & Co, strawberry mascarpone by Rockpool Bar & Grill, chicken breakfast sandwiches by Belles Hot Chicken, coffee by Market Lane roasters, and hugs from radio presenter Hamish Blake and entrepeneur wife Zoe Foster Blake.

Rockpool's Neil Perry will fly down from Sydney for the bake sale.

"This guy [Ben Shewry] is a legend and I love him, so much so that I'm getting up at 4am, flying to Melbourne, doing the bake sale and flying back at 2pm," Perry wrote on Instagram.

"I'm book-ended with other commitments but couldn't miss supporting such a great cause."

Shewry says he was initially worried the shooting would change the identity of New Zealand and instil fear in people.

But the country has been galvanised by it, he says, and everyone has come together.

"We won't let this one person change who we are as a nation."

Chefs will be donating their time and equipment for the event, and every cent raised on the day will go straight to the Givealittle fund set up by Victim Support in New Zealand, which has so far raised $9 million.

Heesco will be creating a mural to honour the victims.

Bake for Christchurch will be held at Attica, 74 Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea, from 9am-noon or until sold out. Sales are cash only. To donate direct: givealittle.co.nz
