Burger nerds went into meltdown on Twitter last week when a bloke by the name of Thomas Baekdal, founder of Baekdal Media, pointed out the differences between the Apple and Google burger emojis.

"How could Google be so STUPID?!" shrieked The Internet. "Everyone knows you place cheese on top of the meat, not the bun."

The Internet was more or less right - it's rare to find a burger with cheese as the bottom layer. Is it really first-degree burger murder for cheese to touch bun? A few suburban fish-and-shops still melt cheese to the bottom bun and McDonald's practices the alleged dark art on its Filet-o-Fish*.

With help from the legends at Mary's, we pitted the burger emojis together IRL to see if there was discernible difference between cheese-on-bun and cheese-on-meat.

*While we're here, it's worth noting that the ultimate "McHack" is a cheeseburger on a Filet-o-Fish bun. The fish sandwich bun is steamed rather than toasted, resulting in a squishier, fluffier bread top. Cheese should be layered to personal taste.
