When Barangaroo House's big-ticket executive chef Cory Campbell departed the Sydney mega venue earlier this year, the noise was he'd open his own venue in Sydney or his native Newcastle.

But the former Vue de Monde head chef has taken a less expected detour, signing on to run the kitchen at Lang Walker's luxe Kokomo Private Island in Fiji.

The chef tells Good Food that running his own small venue remains his dream. But he argues the cost and liveability of the Sydney – where he says produce in some extremes can be double that in Melbourne – is a difficult hurdle.

He argues the completion of the light rail will go a long way to sorting out some of its problems.

Campbell hopes to return, but for now he's bound for the sands of Fiji.

"We have a child, which changed a lot of things, and spending time with him and travelling became an option … so I'm off to Fiji."
