Looking for a winner in the 2020 food game? It's difficult to look past the ongoing strength of Middle Eastern food and the rise of the Sydney suburbs.

"We've been looking for a site in Bondi for a long time," says restaurateur Matt Yazbek, owner of Toko restaurant and Cubby's Kitchen.

Yazbek has found one, and will slide a new branch of his Lebanese-leaning Cubby's into the former Blanca site on Hall Street next week.

"There's a real shift to the suburbs" says Yazbek, who has also been scouting Double Bay sites to open another Toko outpost.

COVID-19 has galvanised support of local communities and boosted many suburban restaurants, something the restaurateur wants to cash in on.

"It's going to be family style, family oriented. Friendly to locals, we're going to offer the BYO wine option every day," he says while still offering a wine list with some Lebanese wines.

Bondi will welcome another new eatery this week. The crew behind Taquiza, Carbon and La Palma opens Calita on Wednesday in between Sean's Panaroma and Porch and Parlour at North Bondi.
